The Claw

Type: Intelligence / Military (Secret Police and Assassin Network) | Founded: By Surly (later Empress Laseen) during the Empire's early years | First Appeared: Book 1 (GotM)

Overview

The Claw is the Malazan Empire's feared secret police, intelligence service, and assassin network -- a shadowy organization that serves as the Empress's personal instrument of power, operating outside the normal military chain of command. Clawmembers are trained killers, spies, and infiltrators who execute the Empire's most sensitive operations: political assassinations, intelligence gathering, counterintelligence, and the elimination of threats both internal and external.

The Claw answers directly to the Empress through the Clawmaster, making it an instrument of political rather than military authority. This distinction is crucial: while the Malazan military fights the Empire's wars, the Claw fights the Empress's personal battles -- against rebels, traitors, rival powers, and, increasingly, against the Empire's own soldiers when they become inconvenient.

The organization's reputation is one of ruthless efficiency and near-supernatural capability. A single Claw operative is a deadly threat; a Claw Hand (a team of five) can eliminate almost any target. The Claw's presence is felt throughout the series as an ever-present threat, and their operations -- both successful and failed -- shape the political landscape of the Empire.

History

Founding

The Claw was created by Surly -- the woman who would become Empress Laseen -- during the early days of the Malazan Empire. Surly organized the network from her position as a key member of Kellanved's inner circle, building an intelligence apparatus that would eventually give her the power to seize the throne.

Before the Claw, the Empire's intelligence operations were handled by the Talon, an older network loyal to Dancer. Surly systematically dismantled the Talon and replaced it with the Claw, eliminating Talon operatives and absorbing those who would switch allegiance. This transition was itself an act of political warfare -- by the time Surly made her move against Kellanved and Dancer, the Claw was entirely her instrument.

The Coup

The Claw played a central role in Surly's assassination of Kellanved and Dancer (though the founders' "death" was actually their ascension to godhood). With the Claw firmly under her control, Surly -- now Empress Laseen -- used the organization to consolidate her power, conducting purges of the Old Guard and eliminating potential rivals.

The Purges

Under Laseen, the Claw was used to systematically eliminate veteran officers and soldiers who might have remained loyal to Kellanved. These purges -- the "cutting" of the Old Guard -- devastated the Empire's institutional knowledge and bred deep resentment among the military. The Claw's role in these purges made it feared and hated by the very soldiers it nominally served alongside.

Operations Across the Series

The Claw conducts operations on every continent where the Empire has interests. On Seven Cities, Claw operatives hunt rebels and protect (or eliminate) Imperial officials. On Genabackis, they shadow the military campaigns and conduct covert operations. On Quon Tali, they maintain the Empress's grip on power. Their most notable failures include the inability to kill Kalam Mekhar (himself a former Claw-trained assassin) and their eventual decimation during the night at Malaz City when they were turned against the Bonehunters.

Training and Recruitment

Claw operatives are selected for talent and ruthlessness, then subjected to intensive training in combat, stealth, poisons, disguise, and intelligence gathering. The training is brutal and selective -- many candidates do not survive. Those who do emerge as some of the most dangerous individuals in the Empire.

Capabilities

Warrens

Many Claw operatives are trained in the use of the Imperial Warren (Mockra) or other warrens that enhance their stealth and combat capabilities. Claw mages provide magical support for operations, including concealment, communication, and offensive magic.

Key Members

Role in the Series

Book 1: Gardens of the Moon (GotM)

The Claw operates in the shadows throughout, with Topper making appearances and Claw operatives conducting missions in Darujhistan. The tension between the Claw and the Bridgeburners -- with the Claw targeting the company for elimination on the Empress's orders -- is a key undercurrent.

Book 2: Deadhouse Gates (DG)

Claw operative Pearl features prominently. Kalam's journey to Quon Tali to assassinate the Empress brings him into direct conflict with Claw Hands sent to intercept him. The cat-and-mouse between Kalam and the Claw across Seven Cities and on Malaz Island showcases both the organization's capabilities and its limitations.

Book 4: House of Chains (HoC)

Pearl operates on Seven Cities, tracking events in the rebel camp and pursuing his own agenda. The Claw's role in Imperial politics on the subcontinent is explored.

Book 6: The Bonehunters (BH)

The Claw's darkest hour comes in Malaz City, when they are deployed against the Bonehunters on the Empress's orders. The Claw Hands attack the army's officers and soldiers in the streets, but the Bonehunters -- hardened by Y'Ghatan and Seven Cities -- fight back with devastating effectiveness. The night results in massive Claw casualties and the final severing of the Bonehunters' loyalty to the Empire.
