Quick Ben
Also known as: Ben Adaephon Delat, Bridgeburner High Mage | Race: Human (Seven Cities native) | Warren/Affiliation: Multiple Warrens (twelve souls, access to many paths), BridgeburnersSummary
Quick Ben is the squad mage of the Bridgeburners and one of the most enigmatic and powerful mortal mages in the Malazan world. His true name is Ben Adaephon Delat, and his extraordinary power derives from a ritual in the Holy Desert of Raraku in which he bound the souls of twelve mages into himself, granting him access to an unprecedented number of warrens. This makes him virtually unmatched among mortal magic users, capable of shifting between magical paths mid-combat in ways that leave even ascendants unsettled.
Quick Ben is defined by his cunning. He is a schemer, a bluffer, and a trickster who consistently punches above his weight by outthinking opponents who may be more powerful than he is. His partnership with Kalam Mekhar is one of the great friendships in the series, built on absolute trust and complementary skills — Quick Ben provides the magical firepower and strategic thinking, while Kalam provides the lethality.
Despite his secretive nature and constant machinations, Quick Ben is fundamentally loyal to his friends and to the Bridgeburner legacy. He operates in the shadows not for personal gain but to protect those he cares about, often engineering elaborate contingencies that only become apparent when everything seems lost.
Arc by Book
Book 1: Gardens of the Moon
Quick Ben serves as the squad mage under Whiskeyjack during the Bridgeburners' mission to Darujhistan. He orchestrates an elaborate plan with Kalam involving the manipulation of various powers, including a daring gambit to confront a demon lord. His multi-warren abilities are first demonstrated here, establishing him as far more than an ordinary squad mage. He helps unravel the possession of Sorry and plays a critical role in the final confrontation beneath Darujhistan.
Book 3: Memories of Ice
Quick Ben accompanies the Bridgeburners as they march with Dujek Onearm's Host against the Pannion Domin. He investigates the poisoning of the warrens and confronts supernatural threats that test even his considerable abilities. His schemes and contingencies prove vital during the campaign, and he demonstrates a willingness to challenge ascendant-level threats. His grief at Whiskeyjack's death is profound.
Book 6: The Bonehunters
Quick Ben operates alongside the Bonehunters under Tavore Paran's command. He confronts the growing threat of the Crippled God and engages in magical battles of staggering scale. His alliance with Ganoes Paran deepens as they work to heal the warrens. He faces off against Icarium's unleashed power and demonstrates why gods and ascendants fear him.
Book 7: Reaper's Gale
Quick Ben travels to Letheras with the Bonehunters' invasion force. He confronts the Tiste Edur and the power of the Crippled God directly, engaging in some of his most impressive magical displays. His scheming reaches new heights as he navigates the complex power dynamics of the Letherii continent.
Book 10: The Crippled God
Quick Ben plays a vital role in the final convergence, using his many warrens and cunning to support Tavore's desperate march. He faces the full power of the Forkrul Assail and other threats, proving once again that a sufficiently clever mortal can stand against gods. His loyalty to the Bridgeburner ideal carries through to the series' conclusion.
