Eleint / Dragons
Also known as: Eleint, True Dragons, the Children of Starvald Demelain | Origin Warren/Realm: Starvald Demelain (the Elder Warren of Dragons, the First Warren) | First Appeared: Book 1 (GotM)Overview
The Eleint — dragons — are among the most ancient and powerful beings in the Malazan world. They originate from Starvald Demelain, the First Warren, a realm of pure magical chaos from which all other warrens are said to have descended. True Eleint are not merely large reptilian beasts; they are sentient, immensely powerful beings whose very existence warps the fabric of reality around them. A single dragon is a force comparable to an army; a gathering of dragons is a cataclysm.
The Eleint exist in a complex ecosystem of power. There are True Eleint — born as dragons in Starvald Demelain — and Soletaken Eleint — beings of other races who gained the ability to take dragon form through blood-ritual or other magical means. The distinction matters: True Eleint are generally more powerful and carry the full weight of draconic nature, while Soletaken Eleint retain something of their original identity, though the draconic blood within them constantly pulls at that identity, threatening to subsume it.
Dragons in the Malazan world are not servants or mounts. They are autonomous beings with their own agendas, alliances, and enmities. Some are aligned with specific powers or causes; others are wildly independent. They participate in the cosmic game of ascendants and gods as peers, not pawns, and their involvement in any conflict dramatically escalates its scale and stakes.
History
Starvald Demelain: The First Warren
Starvald Demelain is the oldest of all warrens — the primordial realm of magical chaos from which the more specialized Elder Warrens and later the modern warrens were refined or descended. It is a place of raw, undifferentiated magical power, and the Eleint who dwell within it are creatures of that chaos. The gate to Starvald Demelain is one of the most dangerous thresholds in the Malazan world — opening it risks unleashing draconic chaos into the physical realm.
The Ancient Age
In the world's earliest ages, the Eleint were among the dominant forces, contemporary with the founding races (K'Chain Che'Malle, Jaghut, Forkrul Assail). Dragons participated in the primordial conflicts that shaped the world, and their blood — spilled in these ancient battles — became the catalyst for the Soletaken transformation ritual. The blood of dragons carries the power of Starvald Demelain, and exposure to it can transform other beings, granting them the ability to shift into dragon form.
The Tiste-Eleint Connection
The Tiste races have deep connections to the Eleint. Several prominent Tiste — including Anomander Rake, Silchas Ruin, and others — are Soletaken Eleint, capable of taking dragon form. These Tiste-Eleint are among the most powerful beings in the world, combining the magical heritage of their Tiste nature with the raw power of draconic transformation. The process by which they gained this ability is tied to ancient events involving the blood of True Eleint.
Draconus and Dragon-Blood
Draconus, the Elder God who created Dragnipur, has deep connections to Starvald Demelain. Some accounts suggest he is himself of draconic origin or deeply connected to the First Warren. His creation of Dragnipur — a sword that contains a realm — reflects the reality-warping power associated with draconic forces. The Otataral Dragon
One of the most significant dragons in the series is Korabas, the Otataral Dragon — an Eleint whose very essence is otataral, the magic-negating substance. Korabas represents the anti-magical counterpart to the Eleint's normally hyper-magical nature. She was imprisoned because her existence threatens the entire warren system — a dragon that negates magic is an existential threat to a world built on magic. Her potential release is a major plot element in the final books.
Culture and Society
Draconic Nature
Eleint do not have "culture" in the way that humanoid races do. They are driven by powerful instincts — territoriality, dominance, the imperative to fly and hunt and claim. True Eleint are intelligent but their intelligence is alien, shaped by perspectives measured in geological timescales and a fundamental connection to chaos.
The Draconic Imperative
Dragons carry within them the chaos of Starvald Demelain, and this chaos is a force in itself. It pulls at Soletaken Eleint, threatening to overwhelm their original personality with draconic instinct. This "draconic madness" is a constant danger for beings like Anomander Rake and Silchas Ruin — the longer they spend in dragon form, the more the draconic nature asserts itself. This imperative is not evil; it is simply the nature of chaos, which cares nothing for order, morality, or restraint.
Solitary and Territorial
Eleint are fundamentally solitary and territorial. They do not form societies, build institutions, or cooperate naturally. When multiple dragons gather, it is either for mating, battle, or because some extraordinary force has drawn them together — and such gatherings are inherently volatile.
Eleint and Power Structures
Dragons exist partially outside the formal power structures of the Deck of Dragons and the Thrones of Power. They are too chaotic, too powerful, and too independent to fit neatly into the Houses and positions of the Deck. However, their actions profoundly affect the balance of power, and when dragons enter a convergence, the stakes escalate dramatically.
Notable Members
True Eleint
- Silanah — An ancient True Eleint of red-scaled magnificence, allied with Anomander Rake. She perches atop the tower in Black Coral and is one of the most powerful dragons in the world. Her loyalty to Rake is one of the great mysteries — a True Eleint who chooses to serve another is extraordinary.
- Korabas — The Otataral Dragon, a True Eleint of anti-magic, imprisoned for the threat she poses to the warren system. Her potential release in DoD/TCG is a major plot point.
- Ampelas, Kalse, Eloth, and others — Ancient Eleint imprisoned in Starvald Demelain or within Azath Houses, stirring as the final convergence approaches.
- Dryjhna — The Apocalyptic, a dragon connected to the Whirlwind cult in Seven Cities.
Soletaken Eleint
- Anomander Rake — Tiste Andii who can assume the form of a massive black dragon; one of the most powerful Soletaken Eleint in existence
- Silchas Ruin — Tiste Andii, Anomander's brother, who transforms into a white dragon; freed from Azath imprisonment in MT
- Olar Ethil — While primarily known as the first T'lan Imass Bonecaster, she is also a Soletaken with connections to ancient powers, though her primary nature is that of a bonecaster rather than a dragon
- Draconus — Elder God with draconic connections, creator of Dragnipur
Powers and Abilities
- Immense physical power — Dragons are among the largest and most physically devastating beings in the world. A single dragon can destroy an army.
- Breath weapons — Eleint can project devastating breath attacks, typically fire but also other forms of destructive energy depending on the dragon's nature
- Flight — Dragons can fly, giving them strategic and tactical mobility unmatched by ground-bound forces
- Warren manipulation — As beings of Starvald Demelain, Eleint have an innate connection to the source of all warrens and can disrupt, manipulate, or overwhelm other magical paths
- Extreme resilience — Dragons are incredibly difficult to kill, capable of sustaining damage that would destroy any other being
- Chaos aura — The presence of a True Eleint destabilizes the local magical environment, making organized sorcery unpredictable in their vicinity
- Reality warping — At the highest levels of power, Eleint can alter reality itself, their connection to Starvald Demelain's chaos giving them influence over the fabric of the world
- Extended lifespan — Eleint live for geological timescales, with some dragons being as old as the world itself
- Magical negation (Korabas only) — The Otataral Dragon can negate all magic in her vicinity
Role in the Series
Dragons appear throughout the Malazan Book of the Fallen, escalating in prominence and impact as the series progresses.
In Gardens of the Moon (Book 1), Anomander Rake's dragon form is one of the most dramatic reveals, establishing that dragons are beings of supreme power. Silanah's presence reinforces the idea that True Eleint are forces unto themselves.
Through the middle books, dragons appear in various contexts: as threats, as allies, as obstacles, and as symbols of the raw power that underlies the Malazan world. References to Starvald Demelain and the draconic blood that creates Soletaken Eleint build the mythology.
In Midnight Tides (Book 5) and Reaper's Gale (Book 7), Silchas Ruin — freed from Azath imprisonment — becomes a major character, providing a Soletaken Eleint perspective on events.
In Dust of Dreams (Book 9) and The Crippled God (Book 10), dragons become central to the final convergence. Korabas the Otataral Dragon threatens to unravel the magical fabric of the world. Multiple Eleint — both True and Soletaken — participate in the climactic battles. The tension between draconic chaos and the ordered structure of the warrens reaches its peak.
The Eleint represent the ultimate expression of the Malazan world's theme that power is inherently chaotic and resistant to control. They are chaos given wings and teeth — beautiful, terrifying, and fundamentally untameable. Their role in the final convergence underscores the idea that the world's oldest and most powerful forces cannot simply be contained or ignored; they must be reckoned with.
