Draconus
Also known as: the Suzerain of Night, Elder God, Creator of Dragnipur | Race: Elder God (Tiste Andii progenitor) | Warren/Affiliation: Kurald Galain (Darkness), Elder WarrenSummary
Draconus is one of the most ancient and powerful Elder Gods in the Malazan world, and the creator of Dragnipur — the legendary sword that chains the souls of the slain to an eternal wagon fleeing Chaos within the sword's own internal realm. He forged Dragnipur to house and protect the Gate of Darkness (the portal to Kurald Galain) from the encroachment of Chaos, but in one of the supreme ironies of the series, he was slain by Anomander Rake using his own sword and was himself chained to the wagon he created.
Draconus spent millennia trapped within Dragnipur, pulling the wagon alongside countless other souls, enduring the very punishment he designed for others. His imprisonment is both literal and metaphorical — the creator trapped by his creation, the father figure brought low by his own child (in the symbolic sense, as the Tiste Andii are in some ways his descendants through his relationship with Mother Dark).
Draconus's character embodies the series' meditation on power and its consequences. He created Dragnipur out of necessity — to protect the Gate of Darkness — but the sword became an instrument of horror. His relationship with Mother Dark, the goddess of Darkness, is central to the cosmology of the Tiste Andii, and his fall and imprisonment shaped the fate of an entire race for millennia.
Arc by Book
Book 3: Memories of Ice
Draconus appears within the realm of Dragnipur as Ganoes Paran enters the sword during one of his excursions as Master of the Deck. Draconus is revealed as one of the chained souls pulling the wagon, enduring the punishment his own creation inflicts. His presence within the sword, and the revelation that the sword was created to protect the Gate of Darkness, adds depth to the mythology of Dragnipur and the Tiste Andii.
Book 8: Toll the Hounds
Draconus's story reaches its climax. Within Dragnipur, the wagon is slowing as Chaos closes in on the Gate of Darkness — the very catastrophe the sword was created to prevent. Anomander Rake's sacrifice — allowing himself to be killed by Dragnipur so he can enter the sword and shatter the chains from within — frees Draconus and all the other trapped souls. Draconus emerges into the mortal world after millennia of imprisonment, a being of immense power now loosed upon a world that has changed beyond recognition. His release is one of the pivotal events of the convergence at Darujhistan.
Book 10: The Crippled God
The freed Draconus plays a role in the final convergence, his Elder God power and his ancient knowledge making him a significant factor in the climactic events. His emergence from Dragnipur and his re-engagement with the world contribute to the reshaping of divine power that defines the series' conclusion.
