The Edur Invasion of Lether

When: Climax of Midnight Tides | Where: Lether (kingdom and capital Letheras) | Book(s): Book 5 (MT)

Summary

The Edur Invasion of Lether is the culminating military event of Midnight Tides, in which the newly unified Tiste Edur -- empowered by the Crippled God and led by Emperor Rhulad Sengar -- launch a devastating campaign against the Letherii Kingdom, overwhelming the larger and wealthier Letherii military through a combination of shadow magic, K'Chain Che'Malle wraith warriors, and the unkillable Emperor wielding his cursed sword. The invasion culminates in the fall of Letheras, the death and resurrection of Rhulad in single combat with Brys Beddict, and the collapse of the old Letherii political order.

The invasion is remarkable not only for its military dimensions but for its thematic weight. The Letherii -- whose empire is built on economic conquest, debt-slavery, and the commodification of everything -- are defeated not by a superior economy or a larger army but by a force that operates entirely outside their economic paradigm. The Edur cannot be bought, indebted, or financially manipulated, and their victory exposes the fundamental weakness of a civilization that has mistaken wealth for strength.

Yet the invasion is also a tragedy for the Edur. Their victory is a poisoned gift from the Crippled God, and the power they wield is destroying them from within. Rhulad's madness, Hannan Mosag's corruption, and the fracturing of the Sengar family all demonstrate that the conquerors are as much victims as victors.

Background

The conflict between the Tiste Edur and the Letherii had been building for years. The Letherii Kingdom had been expanding economically, attempting to subjugate the Edur through the same debt-based strategies they had used against other neighbouring peoples. The Edur, however, operated on a fundamentally different value system -- tribal honour, shadow magic, and ancestral tradition -- that resisted financial manipulation.

The unification of the six Edur tribes under Warlock King Hannan Mosag created a unified Edur political entity for the first time in generations. Mosag's ambitions led him to seek power from the Crippled God, whose influence corrupted the Edur's shadow magic and introduced alien elements -- including K'Chain Che'Malle wraiths -- into their forces.

The discovery of the Crippled God's cursed sword by Rhulad Sengar transformed the political situation. The sword killed Rhulad and then resurrected him, each cycle of death and rebirth increasing his power while driving him deeper into madness. Rhulad's claim to emperorship -- backed by the sword's undeniable power -- superseded Mosag's authority and set the stage for the invasion.

On the Letherii side, the kingdom was militarily complacent, its strength directed more toward economic manipulation than martial preparedness. King Ezgara Diskanar, the Chancellor, and the Liberty Consign all failed to recognize the nature of the Edur threat until it was too late.

Key Participants

The Invasion

The Edur Advance

The Edur crossed into Letherii territory with a force that was numerically smaller than the Letherii army but qualitatively transformed by the Crippled God's gifts. Shadow magic allowed Edur warlocks to conceal troop movements, strike at enemy communications, and create zones of darkness that disoriented Letherii defenders. K'Chain Che'Malle wraiths -- ancient undead creatures of terrible power -- served as shock troops.

Letherii Defeats

The Letherii military, trained for conventional warfare and accustomed to fighting economically subjugated peoples, was unprepared for the Edur's approach. Letherii armies were defeated in a series of engagements, their commanders outmanoeuvred and their soldiers overwhelmed by enemies they could not see, could not buy, and could not understand.

The March on Letheras

The Edur advance on the capital was relentless. As the outer defences fell, panic spread through Letheras. The Liberty Consign and merchant houses scrambled to protect their wealth, the political class fractured, and the population faced the reality that their economic power was meaningless against shadow magic and undead warriors.

The Fall of Letheras

The climax came with the Edur assault on Letheras itself. The city's defences were overwhelmed, and the fighting moved into the streets. The most dramatic moment was the duel between Brys Beddict, the King's Champion and the finest swordsman in Lether, and Emperor Rhulad. Brys killed Rhulad -- but the cursed sword resurrected the Emperor, rendering the victory hollow. Brys was subsequently killed through treachery (poisoned by the Chancellor's agents).

Ceda Kuru Qan, the kingdom's most powerful mage, made a desperate last stand, wielding enormous power in a final attempt to stop the Edur. His sacrifice was heroic but ultimately futile against the combined weight of the Edur's supernatural advantages.

King Ezgara Diskanar fell with his kingdom, and the Letherii political order collapsed. Rhulad claimed the Letherii throne, establishing the Tiste Edur Empire over the conquered kingdom.

Aftermath / Consequences

The Edur Occupation

The Edur conquest created a new political reality: a Tiste Edur emperor sitting on a Letherii throne, ruling a kingdom whose economic and administrative systems he could not comprehend. The Letherii merchant class quickly adapted, maintaining the economic machinery while nominally serving Edur masters. The occupation became a strange symbiosis in which the Edur held military power while the Letherii controlled the actual levers of governance.

Trull Sengar's Shorning

Trull Sengar, who had opposed the invasion's corruption and spoken against the Crippled God's influence, was Shorn -- ritually exiled from the Edur people, stripped of his ties and cast out. His punishment for conscience became one of the series' most poignant storylines.

The Beddict Brothers' Fates

Hull Beddict, who had sided with the Edur, was killed during the invasion -- dying for a cause that proved as corrupt as the one he had abandoned. Brys Beddict was killed through treachery. Only Tehol survived, continuing his economic sabotage that would eventually bring down both the Letherii economic system and the Edur occupation in Reaper's Gale.

Seeds of Later Collapse

The invasion planted the seeds of the Edur Empire's eventual collapse. Rhulad's madness deepened with each resurrection, Hannan Mosag's corruption spread, and the Crippled God's influence ate at the foundations of Edur society. The arrival of the Bonehunters in Reaper's Gale would provide the final push.

Significance

The Edur Invasion of Lether is one of the series' most thematically rich events. It demonstrates that economic power, however vast, is ultimately illusory when confronted by forces that do not operate within its framework. The Letherii, who had conquered dozens of peoples through debt and trade manipulation, were helpless against an enemy that could not be bought.

Yet the invasion is also a cautionary tale about the corruption of power. The Edur achieved their victory through an alliance with the Crippled God -- a force that used them as instruments rather than partners. Their triumph was their undoing, as the power that won them an empire simultaneously destroyed their culture, their families, and their souls.

The invasion also explores the complicity of the colonized. Hull Beddict's decision to side with the invaders -- out of genuine guilt over the Letherii system's cruelty -- raises uncomfortable questions about when resistance becomes collaboration and when justice becomes vengeance.
