Kruppe

Also known as: Kruppe of Darujhistan, the Eel (suspected) | Race: Human | Warren/Affiliation: Darujhistan, D'riss (Elder Warren of Earth — through dreams)

Summary

Kruppe is a rotund, seemingly foolish, endlessly loquacious citizen of Darujhistan who is in fact one of the most extraordinary figures in the Malazan world. Perpetually eating, talking in an elaborate third-person style, and appearing to bumble through life, Kruppe conceals behind his comic exterior a mind of staggering depth and magical abilities that rival those of ascendants. He is widely suspected of being "the Eel" — the mysterious information broker who controls Darujhistan's underworld — though he would never confirm such a thing directly.

Kruppe is unique in the series as a character who moves through the story as both comic relief and cosmic player. His dream-walking abilities allow him to traverse realms and interact with powers far beyond mortal reach. He serves as narrator for significant portions of Toll the Hounds, and his verbose, meandering style masks profound truths and careful manipulations. He is a trickster figure in the truest sense — one who uses apparent foolishness as both shield and weapon.

Despite his absurdity, Kruppe is fundamentally a protector of Darujhistan. He loves his city with all his considerable heart, and much of his scheming is directed toward keeping it safe from the various powers — mortal and divine — that would consume it. He is one of the few characters who consistently outmanoeuvres gods and ascendants through nothing more than wit, charm, and an apparently inexhaustible appetite.

Arc by Book

Book 1: Gardens of the Moon

Kruppe is introduced as a seemingly hapless denizen of Darujhistan who frequents the Phoenix Inn and befriends Crokus Younghand. He is recruited by the mysterious Eel (who may be himself) and becomes entangled in the various plots surrounding the city. His dream-walking abilities are first revealed, and he demonstrates a capacity to interact with Elder powers. He plays a crucial role in the events surrounding the Jaghut Tyrant, though his precise contributions are deliberately obscured by his own misdirection.

Book 3: Memories of Ice

Kruppe serves as a diplomat and intermediary between the various allied forces — the Malazan Host, Caladan Brood's army, and the Tiste Andii — working to keep the alliance functional. His interactions with Anomander Rake and other powerful figures reveal that even the Lord of Moon's Spawn treats Kruppe with a certain bemused respect. He continues to dream-walk and manipulate events from behind his facade of foolishness.

Book 8: Toll the Hounds

Kruppe takes centre stage as the narrator and one of the key actors in the convergence at Darujhistan. He serves as narrator for the book, his verbose style framing the tragedy and wonder of events. He plays a direct role in the climactic confrontations, demonstrating powers that surprise even those who thought they knew him. His protection of Darujhistan during the convergence reveals the true depth of his abilities and commitment.
