Heboric

Summary

Heboric is a defrocked priest of Fener, the Boar of Summer (God of War), whose hands were ritually severed as punishment for heresy — specifically, for writing a damning historical account of the Malazan Empire. Despite losing his hands, Heboric retains ghostly, invisible replacements that possess supernatural properties, making him one of the most unusual characters in the series.

Heboric's journey is one of involuntary transformation. He begins as a broken scholar and ex-priest, sent to the otataral mines alongside Felisin Paran. Over the course of the series, his ghostly hands become conduits for increasingly powerful and alien forces — first otataral (the magic-deadening substance), then the jade power of mysterious alien entities, then the ascendant energy of Treach, the new Tiger of Summer who replaces Fener. Each transformation layers new burdens and abilities upon a man who never sought power.

Book 2: Deadhouse Gates

Heboric endures the otataral mines alongside Felisin and Baudin. His ghostly hands, remnants of his connection to Fener, mark him as unusual even in a world of magic. He escapes the mines with Felisin and Baudin and crosses the desert toward Raraku. During their journey, he encounters a massive jade statue partially buried in the desert and touches it — an act that transforms his ghost hands and begins his connection to the alien jade entities. He reaches the oasis of Sha'ik and becomes part of the Whirlwind rebellion's inner circle.

Book 4: House of Chains

Heboric remains in Raraku as part of Sha'ik's entourage, his jade-infected hands growing more powerful and more alien. He struggles with the forces flowing through him and serves as an unwilling conduit for powers he does not fully understand. His relationship with Felisin continues to deteriorate as she descends further into bitterness and Sha'ik's divine madness. When the rebellion collapses, Heboric is freed from Raraku.

Book 6: The Bonehunters

Heboric's transformation continues as he becomes increasingly connected to Treach and the jade entities. His ghost hands now glow with alien power, and he struggles to comprehend and control the forces moving through him. His journey through Seven Cities intersects with the broader conflicts of the book. He ultimately meets his end, his death serving as a catalyst for supernatural events — specifically, his connection to the jade entities and to Fener/Treach reaches its conclusion, with cosmic implications.
